February Book Club: ‘The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman’

Thanks to the multitude who came down for the last Book Club, it was excellent and got our year off to a good start. Mrs Dalloway had some polar views and despite some great individual scores it had a rather sorry overall score of 6.92.

Next time remember to go to the bar first for a drink before sitting down at 7.45, we want to try and avoid overcrowding people still eating.

Next Book Club is Wednesday 11th February 7.30 at the Crucible Corner. This month we are reading 'The Peculiar Life of a Lonely Postman' by Denis Theriault.

"...Secretly steaming open envelopes and reading the letters inside, Bilodo has found an escape from his lonely and routine life as a postman. When one day he comes across a mysterious letter containing only a single haiku, he finds himself avidly caught up in the relationship between a long-distance couple, who write to each other using only beautiful poetry. Pub Club

The next pub event is Friday 6th February, 7.30 at The Red Deer in town. Everyone is welcome to come along.

Book Club trip to Bath

This year's outing is going to be to the lovely Spa town of Bath, loosely related to reading Persuasion in April. We need to get a date ASAP so we can start booking things like accommodation etc. How do people feel about the May Bank Holiday weekend, May 2nd - 4th? This would give an extra day for travel etc.

What worked well last time is people organising their own accommodation centrally and then meeting up to do things in the town. We could see if there are any good deals on although probably not likely over the BH. Once we've set the date we can get moving to organise anything else we fancy, I'm sure it will involve a trip to the Baths.

October Book Club

Last Bookclub was great and thanks to all who came along. There was a lot of love for 'Carter Beats The Devil' and it got an impressive three 10s. However there was a few apathetic responses so it's overall score was 7.42.

October's book club is Wednesday 8th October. We're reading Small Gods by Terry Pratchett. This is the 13th book in the highly successful Discworld novels. We've chosen this as it's very funny and, more than the others, can be read on its own.

".....Religion is a controversial business in the Discworld. Everyone has their own opinion, and indeed their own gods. Who come in all shapes and sizes. In such a competitive environment, there is a pressing need to make one's presence felt. And it's certainly not remotely helpful to be reduced to be appearing in the form of a tortoise, a manifestation far below god-like status in anyone's book. In such instances, you need an acolyte, and fast. Preferably one who won't ask too many questions..."

Twelfth Night at the Crucible

We're going to get another fix of The Bard, because we just can't get enough! Wednesday 15th October, 7.30. tickets will be around £21. I'm booking tickets at the end of this week and if you want to come you need to let me know ASAP if you want to sit with us. Of course you can book your own tickets and meet us for drinks.

Film Club

The next Film Club is Friday 19th September hosted by the Offutts. We're going to watch the film of 'One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest' and then some light relief afterwards, maybe the Australian classic 'Strictly Ballroom'. If you're interested let us know and we'll give you the address etc.

Poetry Club

Wednesday 24th September, 7.30 at the Crucible Corner.

We're reading T.S Eliot's, The Wasteland. "...it's a dense and allusive (and possibly elusive) Modernist poem capturing the bleakness that Eliot perceived in early 20th Century London.

Book Quiz

Wednesday 29th October, 6.30-8.00, Carpenter room, Central Library, Surrey Street in town. We're making a team and going to take on all challengers. "..Can you emerge victorious in our battle of the book lovers? Test your passion and knowledge against other reading groups, workplaces and bibliophiles. Drinks and snacks are provided and prizes are to be won..."

Not long till our Stratford trip on Saturday 19th July, to see 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona' by RSC. There has been some conversation on Facebook and if you're going and haven't seen it then get in touch. Most people are getting there around lunch time on the Saturday. We'll have dinner somewhere before the performance then go for drinks afterwards.

May Book Club and new book list

Hello Book Clubbers

Book club is THIS Wednesday, 14th May, 7.30 at Crucible Corner. We're reading 'The Marrying of Chani Kuffman' by Eve Harris. This was on the long list for the Man Booker prize in 2013. It looks at the marriage of 18yr old Chani, from the ultra-orthodox Jewish community in North West London. Soon, buried secrets, fear and sexual desire bubble to the surface in a story of liberation and choice.

April Book Club and Stratford trip

Next Book club is Wednesday 9th April, 7.30 at Crucible Corner. We're reading 'Of Mice and Men' by John Steinbeck. If you're reading it for the first time or the fifth, hopefully it will offer something new.

Book Club in Stratford

We're planning a night away in Stratford to have fun and watch some Shakespeare. The proposed date is Saturday 19th July, travelling down on the Saturday and staying till Sunday. We would like to see 'The Two Gentlemen of Verona' by RSC but we will need to move fast to get tickets. Looking on the website there are a few tickets left in the upper circle, they are mostly 'restricted view' at £18. Obviously the restricted view isn't great but it makes it much more affordable. We have some names already but If you would like to come then you need to let us know by replying to this email by WEDNESDAY as this is when we will be buying the tickets. You can of course buy your own tickets later if needed if there are any still available.
Once we have these tickets then we can book some accommodation in the centre. More details to follow.

Poetry Club

Next Poetry Club is 26th March, 7.30 at Crucible Corner. This month we're reading Sylvia Plath to cheer us up a bit. In particular we'll be reading:

The Applicant, Lady Lazarus, Night Dances, Letter in November, Daddy, You're, Edge, Blackberrying.

All of these, apart from the last one, are from 'Ariel' which is he best known collection.

Our last book 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' by Milan Kundera provoked huge amounts of discussion and strong emotions! A book that was totally life changing for some and a waste of a week for others!

Christmas at Book Club

It is now time to talk about Christmas! We’ll be having our Book Club Christmas special on Wednesday 11th December, 7.30 at the Crucible Corner. We will be having food and a Christmas book swap. We have booked a table and they are going to give us the menu beforehand (they have not yet emailed it so we will send it in a separate email).  The 'Book swap' is simple, bring a book, receive a book. A few rules; it must be a book you would like someone to read rather than one you just want to get rid of, it can't be a previous book club book and it needs to be wrapped. If you would like to join us then please let us know and we can add you to the list. Normal Book Club resumes in January. If you haven't been before you are more than welcome to turn up for the Christmas one.

November Book Club — ‘The Unbearable Lightness of Being’ by Milan Kunder

Hello Book Clubbers

Thanks to all who came away for the Whitby weekend. It was a roaring success and I think everyone would agree we had a great time.

Here are details of this month, big book, Christmas and new books on the list.

Next Book club is Wednesday 13th November, 7.30, at Crucible Corner, Tudor square. We're reading 'The Unbearable Lightness of Being' by Milan Kundera. Juxtaposing Prague, Geneva, Thailand and the United States, a story of irreconcilable loves and infidelities. Milan Kundera addresses himself to the nature of twentieth-century 'Being' In a world in which lives are shaped by irrevocable choices and by fortuitous events, a world in which everything occurs but once, existence seems to lose its substance, its weight. We feel, says the novelist, 'the unbearable lightness of being' - not only as the consequence of our private acts but also in the public sphere, and the two inevitably intertwine. (apparently!)

NEXT WEEK - October 23rd - Ulysses by James Joyce. There has been some raised eyebrows at this choice, however it was chosen as a lot of people would at least like to have a go at reading it. October Book Club — ‘Dracula’ by Bram Stoker

Hello Bookclubbers

Thanks to all who came to our poetry experiment. While we may not do poetry again in a 'regular' book club there was definitely an appetite for the spoken word, so watch this space.

Next Book club is Wednesday 9th October, 7.30 at Crucible Corner, Tudor square. It's all getting a little bit sinister as we read 'Dracula' by Bram Stoker, (the world's most famous Bram). A 1897 Gothic horror novel, famous for introducing the character Count Dracula, the novel tells the story of Dracula's attempt to move from Transylvania to England, and the battle between Dracula and a small group of men and women led by Professor Abraham Van Helsing. 

Trip to Whitby!
To continue the Dracula theme in October we are going on a tenuously-linked trip to Whitby on Saturday October 12th and Sunday 13th (not the 'Goth weekend'). Most people are booked in at the YHA in Whitby, with a few people staying in hotels etc. If you would like to join us we'd be happy to see if we could book you in at the YHA - alternatively you could sort your own accommodation or just come for the day on Saturday.
 
We're thinking fish and chips, beach fun, Abbey trip, finding some Dracula 'sights' and pubbage in the evening.

Meal out
We're going to Amigos on London rd for some Mexican food on Wednesday 25th September, meet at the restaurant at 7.30. It's BYOB and we've decided against the set menu as the actual menu looks a lot better. Let us know if you'd like to come and we can add you to the list.

Rich is hosting a film night at his flat, Kelham Island. Friday 20th September. We'll be meeting at the Fat Cat pub in Kelham Island at 6.30 for a quick drink then a walk over to the flat. The plan is to watch two films 'Whip it' (female) and 'Fight Club' (Male) for a contrast. If you might be late then contact us for Rich's address. Bring snacks and drinks.

August Book Club— ‘The Great Gatsby' by F Scott Fitzgerald

The next Book club is,  Wednesday 14th August, 7.30 at Crucible Corner. We are reading 'The Great Gatsby' by F Scott Fitzgerald. A story exploring the themes of decadence, idealism, social upheaval and excess, set in the roaring 20s in America.

Trip to Whitby!

As we are reading Dracula in October we have decided on a tenuous trip to Whitby. By general consensus it has been booked for the second weekend in October 12th and 13th. You have the option of either just going for the Saturday or staying till the Sunday. There is a lot of enthusiasm for staying over so we will start looking at some accommodation. Let us know ASAP if you would like to come, so far we have:

May Book Club and the Big Book

Hello All

Here is some information about May book club but don't forget April still has a lot going for it! There's pub club, big book club and the book club social to Bradford!

Next book club is, Wednesday 8th May, 7.30 Crucible corner. We'll be reading 'The line of beauty' by Alan Hollinghurst, a Booker prize winner about love, class, sex and money in the Thatcherite 1980s, a complete coincidence but rather timely. Apologies that it's a rather big book at the same time as 'big book'......be antisocial for a while!

The Big Book

Big book will be on Wednesday, April 24th. 7.30pm at the Crucible Corner. We'll be reading Black Diamonds by Catherine Bailey. A story about the fall of an English dynasty in local Wentworth. Initially recommended by our very own Steve but subsequently recommended by others, should be good....and big!

Book Club in Bradford! 

We're off to see The Pitman Painters' play at Bradford Alhambra Theatre on Sat 20th April at 2.30pm and then we'll be going out for a curry afterwards. Hopefully most people have settled their debts but if not just bring cash on the day. If you're not on the list but would like to come then there may be tickets still available from the box office. 

We'll be going on the train and will be meeting at Sheffield station at 11.30 on the saturday, should be home around 8 or 9pm.

The usual book club is on 10th April, 7.30 Crucible corner. This month we're reading a book by local author Iain Broome, A is for Angelica. It's fairly short so hopefully should leave you some time to finish the big book. I'm not sure how widely available it is but it is definitely available from Amazon.

The Big Book

Big book will be on Wednesday, April 24th. 7.30pm at the Crucible Corner. We'll be reading Black Diamonds by Catherine Bailey. A story about the fall of an English dynasty in local Wentworth. Initially recommended by our very own Steve but subsequently recommended by others, should be good....and big!

July - Catch 22 by Joseph Heller (mainly chosen so that we never have have another discussion about whether we should read it!)

Book Club in Bradford!

We're off to see The Pitman Painters' play at Bradford Alhambra Theatre this month.

We're be going Sat 20th April at 2.30pm and then we'll be going out for a curry afterwards. The tickets for the play are £19.50 each and if you're on Rachel's list can you arrange for an internet transfer or some other way to get the money to her, you can contact her by replying to this email.

If you're not on the list but would like to come then tickets are available from the box office. There is talk of getting the train together but nothing confirmed as yet.

We'll be going Sat 20th April. We have decided to go to the matinee performance at 2.30pm and then go out for a curry afterwards. The tickets will be about £14.50-£24.50 depending on seats and availability. If you would like to come please let Emily and Rachel know asap either via email or Facebook.

February Book Club, the next Big Book, and a trip to Bradford!

Happy February!

Book Club is this WEDNESDAY, 13th February, 7.30 at Crucible corner. We'll be chatting about 'The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry' by Rachel Joyce. Nominated for the Man Booker in 2012, it's a story about a man who sets off the post a letter to his dying friend, funny and poignant if the reviews are to be believed.

Last Big Book was excellent as always we discussed 'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel, some secret history degrees were revealed and made for a delightful discussion.

February Book Club

Hello Bookclubbers!

Last book club was excellent, as always and a good kick off for 2013. The new book list is out and hopefully there will be something for everyone. We've tried to keep it varied and not all the suggestions could go on!

February's Book Club is surprisingly in February, WEDNESDAY, 13th February, 7.30 at Crucible corner. We'll be chatting about 'The Unlikley pilgrimage of Harold Fry' by Rachel Joyce. Nominated for the Man Booker in 2012, it's a story about a man who sets off the post a letter to his dying friend, funny and poignant if the reviews are to be believed.

Next month we need to meet at the bar first and allow the theatre crowd to disperse before rearranging tables....manager's request!

The Big Book

Two weeks to go until the first big book of the year. We're reading 'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel. A historical novel about the Tudors, winner of a Booker prize. (the sequel won another one). We will be meeting Wednesday, January 23rd. 7.30pm at the Crucible Corner. Bring suggestions for the next big book!

January Book Club(s)

Happy New Year!

The first Book Club of 2013 is THIS WEDNESDAY, 9th January,7.30 at Crucible corner. We'll be chatting about 'The Sisters Brothers' by Patrick DeWitt. A western which is excellent and was nominated for the booker prize, definitely not just one for the boys!

The Big Book

The first in the series was a great success and we're doing it again in January. We unanimously decided on 'Wolf Hall' by Hilary Mantel. A historical novel about the Tudors, winner of a Booker prize.

We will be meeting Wednesday, January 23rd. 7.30pm at the Crucible Corner.

Book club social

People really enjoyed The Pitman painters' play we read for the December book club. Apparently the actual play is touring at the beginning of next year. We think the nearest performance may be in Bradford. A tentative plan is to go one Saturday, possibly watch the matinee and then have a curry. More details to follow!

December Book Club and a Greek night out!

Hello Book Clubbers,

Firstly, this Wednesday 28th November is our social My Big Fat Greek Book Club meal. We're off for a Greek meal at Parthenonas on London Rd, meeting at 7.30. Most people have already put their names down for a place but if you would like to come, just turn up and I'm sure we'll be able to make room.

Book Club in December is, Wednesday 12th December, 7.30pm at the Crucible Corner. 
This month we're experimenting with reading a play, 'Pitmen Painters' by Lee Hall. It's based on the Ashington group of painters and is both humourous and moving, (Lee Hall also wrote Billy Eliot). Along with this we'll be having our Christmas book swap, so bring your wrapped offering. Lastly don't forget to bring room for dessert!
